SECTION A – READING (20 Marks)
Q1. Read the following passage carefully. (8 Marks)
The Importance of Trees
- Trees are the lungs of the earth. They absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, making our environment fit for living. In today’s world, with rapid industrialisation and urbanisation, trees play an increasingly vital role in maintaining ecological balance.
- Forests cover about 30 percent of the earth’s surface and are home to more than 80 percent of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity. They provide habitat for countless species of plants, animals and microorganisms. The loss of forests threatens the survival of these species.
- Trees also help in conserving water. Their roots bind the soil and prevent erosion. They help in the water cycle by absorbing groundwater and releasing it into the atmosphere through a process called transpiration. This moisture eventually falls as rain, benefiting agricultural lands.
- Beyond environmental benefits, trees have great economic value. They provide timber, fuel, fruits, medicines, and raw materials for many industries. In rural areas, millions of people depend on forests for their livelihood.
- Despite their importance, forests are being destroyed at an alarming rate. Deforestation leads to climate change, loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, and disruption of water cycles. It is the responsibility of every citizen to protect trees and plant more of them.
On the basis of your reading of the above passage, answer the following questions:
- What role do trees play in maintaining the ecological balance?
- How do trees help in conserving water? Explain the process of transpiration as mentioned in the passage.
- What percentage of the earth’s surface is covered by forests? What do these forests support?
- What are the consequences of deforestation mentioned in the passage?

Mobile Phones – A Boon or a Bane?
- The mobile phone has become one of the most indispensable gadgets of modern life. From a simple communication device, it has evolved into a smartphone – a mini computer that fits in the palm of your hand. Today, people use mobile phones for browsing the internet, shopping, banking, entertainment and much more.
- Mobile phones have brought people closer. One can stay in touch with family and friends across the world at any time. In times of emergency, they serve as lifesavers. Various applications provide real-time navigation, health monitoring, and instant access to information.
- However, excessive use of mobile phones has several disadvantages. Students get distracted from their studies. Cyberbullying, online fraud and privacy invasion are growing concerns. The blue light emitted from screens disturbs sleep patterns, and prolonged use can cause eye strain and neck problems.
- Social media, accessed through mobile phones, has a mixed impact. While it connects people and spreads awareness, it also spreads misinformation and has been linked to increased levels of anxiety and depression, particularly among teenagers.
- Like all technology, mobile phones are neither entirely good nor entirely bad. The key lies in disciplined and mindful use. Setting screen time limits, avoiding phones during meals and study hours, and verifying information before sharing can help us make the best use of this powerful tool.
On the basis of your reading of the above passage, answer the following questions:
- How has the mobile phone evolved over the years? Give two examples of its modern uses.
- State any three advantages of mobile phones as mentioned in the passage.
- What are the health-related problems caused by excessive use of mobile phones?
- How does social media have a mixed impact on people?
- What measures does the author suggest for the disciplined use of mobile phones?
